Best time of year
Autumn and spring are ideal because the soil is moist and the temperatures are mild, so roots establish quickly. Summer turfing is possible with regular watering. Avoid laying turf on frozen or waterlogged ground.
Ground preparation
Remove the old lawn, weeds and stones. Dig over compacted areas, level the surface and rake it to a fine finish. Good preparation is the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that stays patchy.
Laying and aftercare
Turf is laid in staggered rows with tight joins, then rolled lightly. Water thoroughly straight away and keep it moist for the first few weeks. Avoid heavy use for around three weeks, and make the first cut once the roots have taken, with the blades set high.
Turf or seed?
Turf gives a usable lawn in weeks and suits most gardens. Seed is cheaper but takes longer and needs more patience. We will advise on what suits your garden and budget.
Frequently asked questions
How long before I can walk on new turf?
Keep off it for roughly two to three weeks while the roots establish.
Do you remove the old lawn?
