Spring: March to May
Start mowing as growth picks up, with the blades set high for the first cuts. Rake out moss and thatch, apply a spring feed, and repair bare patches with seed. Edge the borders for a crisp finish.
Summer: June to August
Mow weekly and keep the height a little higher in dry spells so the grass copes with heat. Water in the evening if needed. Keep on top of weeds before they set seed.
Autumn: September to November
This is the best time to scarify, aerate and overseed. Clear fallen leaves regularly, because a layer of leaves smothers the grass and encourages disease. Apply an autumn feed.
Winter: December to February
Stay off frozen or waterlogged grass. Mow only on dry days if the grass is still growing, with the blades set high. Winter is a good time to plan changes and book work for the season ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I mow my lawn?
Weekly in the growing season is ideal. In spring and autumn every two weeks is often enough.
What is the best month to lay turf?
Autumn and early spring are best, when the ground is moist and the weather is mild. Turf can be laid in winter if the ground is not frozen.
