How Short Should You Cut Your Lawn?

Cutting too short is the most common reason lawns go thin, yellow and weedy. Getting height and frequency right makes a big difference.

The right height

For most lawns, 25 to 40mm is a good range through the growing season. Go higher, around 40 to 50mm, in shade, dry spells and early spring or late autumn.

The one-third rule

Never remove more than a third of the blade in a single cut. If the grass has got long, cut it in stages over a week or two, lowering the blades gradually.

How often to mow

Weekly in spring and summer, every two weeks in spring and autumn, and rarely in winter. Regular mowing thickens the lawn and keeps weeds down.

Common mistakes

Cutting wet grass, blunt blades, scalping the lawn and leaving clippings in thick clumps all cause problems. Sharp blades and dry conditions give a clean finish.

Want it done for you?

Our regular grass cutting service keeps your lawn at the right height all season, with edges tidied and clippings cleared.

Frequently asked questions

Should I collect the clippings?

Short clippings can be left to feed the lawn. Collect them when the grass is long or wet.

What day should I cut my lawn?

Any dry day. Avoid cutting in the heat of the afternoon in summer.
